Facial Oil Cleansers: A Review

Writer's picture: Bianca SchoombeeBianca Schoombee

Washing your face with an oil might seem strange right? We were taught that oil = clogged pores. And while a part of that statement is true, the other part that people tend to leave out is the benefits that a facial cleansing oil has for skin.

When washing your face with oil correctly you will be able to unclog glands and address breakouts and blackheads, you can also remove dead skin, make-up, and dirt (and yes, even waterproof makeup!). If you are someone with dry skin you will be able to successfully moisturise your skin when adding an oil cleansing step in your skincare regimen. Now if you are someone with oily skin, the oil cleanser will add as a balancing step, preventing your skin from over produce sebum.

Having breakouts? An oil cleanser reduces inflammation in acne and other facial skin conditions by improving the skin’s barrier function, which prevents unwanted bacteria or pathogens from entering.

Heard enough yet?

Here is one oil cleanser that I have been using for about 6 months (and can not live without).

LUMIÈRE CLEANSING MELT & MAKE-UP REMOVER from Orchid Bloom (retails for R 280)

A luxurious botanical cleansing melt that gently cleans and revitalizes the skin. This BALM to OIL cleanser removes traces of daily skin pollutants including makeup, leaving the skin incredibly soft and smooth.

How I use it:

Scoop a small dollop and warm in the palm of your hands (important melting step).

Apply directly onto dry skin.

Massage for a couple of minutes before removing with a warm cloth. (A reusable cleansing cloth is included with this product)

This product works for, and is suitable for ALL SKIN TYPES.

INGREDIENTS: Mangifera Indica Seed Butter, Prunus Amygdalus Dulcis, Orbignya Oleifera Seed Oil, Squalane, Cetearyl Glucoside + Sorbitan Olivate, Tocopherol, Cera Alba, Bergamia Oil, Coriandrum Sativum, *Citral, Geraniol, Limonene, Linalool

It’s important to double cleanse when using an oil cleanser. This means cleaning your skin with your regular cleanser AFTER you have oil cleansed to prevent pore blockage from the cleansing oil.

So, your skin is clean, what is next?

I like to finish off my routine with a skin oil after applying my face cream. A skin oil should not be washed off as it aids in moisturising the skin. Adding a skin oil definitely changed my make-up application game. It gives my skin a healthy and dewy looking finish.

LUMIÈRE SKIN OIL from Orchid Bloom (retails for R 380)

Nourish and hydrate the skin with this lightweight oil serum. Formulated using micro-nutrient rich oils and antioxidants that restore the skin’s natural lipid balance. This product is easily absorbed leaving no oily residue, only replenished super soft skin with a luminous healthy glow.

How I use it:

Apply 2-3 drops and massage into the skin. Use after moisturizing morning and evening.

INGREDIENTS: Squalane, Sclerocarya Birrea Seed Oil, Plukenetia Volubilis Seed Oil, Tocopherol
